SSL Certificates

SSL Certificates

There are many reasons why you need some level of SSL security on your site.  Since 2018, it has been required by the Google browser because without it, users would get either a broken padlock in the upper left corner of the URL and/or a DANGER message warning of a potentially malicious website.

In addition to Google’s mandate, encryption of data moving within the internet after a user hits the submit button to send information is critically vital for privacy and protection.

There are many levels of SSLs and it is CONFUSING, to say the least!  Below is a table that breaks down the type of SSL Certificate, from the least protection to the most protection, including some details regarding coverages.

This is meant to be a basic guide, but if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

SSL Definition

SSL is short for secure socket layer – a technology that encrypts communication between users and a website. This encryption ensures that important data such as usernames, passwords, and credit card information is sent from the user to the site without the risk of interception.

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL-certified website runs on https protocol. This activates the browser padlock or a prominent green browser bar to show visitors it is safe to browse. Reputable websites use SSL to protect their customer’s data and their online transactions; their reputation depends on it.

Why do I need an SSL Certificate?

If your website doesn’t have an SSL certificate, a secure connection can’t be established. This means that the information transmitted is not connected to a cryptographic key. This impacts a customer’s/visitor’s confidence in your business and may even prevent them from ordering from you (if you are an ecommerce site).

In addition, ranking on Google without an SSL certificate is extremely difficult.
